Spring 2025 Career Colloquium

The Graduate School’s Spring Career Colloquium is taking place February 3-7, 2025, in Alumni Hall. This event is in partnership with Vandy GPS at the Career Center, ISSS, and BRET ASPIRE.

The Career Colloquium is organized to provide critical career development opportunities as you begin to think about your future aspirations. With several events throughout the week, there will be many opportunities to connect with professionals and hear advice about the job search. You may attend as many sessions as you like throughout the week. This year, we are also offering a virtual session, as indicated below. Registration is required for each event.

The Intersection of Identity and Career

Join us for an event held in partnership with ISSS, offering international students a space to hear from Vanderbilt faculty and postdoctoral scholars about the value of cultural identity in shaping career trajectories and professional goals. A short, moderated Q&A session will follow. Lunch will be provided.

Five Ways to be a More Confident, Compelling Speaker

This event, held in partnership with the Career Center, will be the first of two workshops. Join speaker, Aimy Aines, who will provide graduate students and postdoctoral fellows with insight into communication strategies, examining five elements of effective speaking:

    1. Grabbing attention with engaging openings
    2. Tapping into emotion
    3.  Having confident presence
    4. Using voice to engage and convey meaning
    5. Structuring content for clarity

How to Make a Strong First Impression and Introduce Yourself

Be a part of a second workshop held in partnership with the Career Center where speaker, Aimy Aines, will provide graduate students and postdoctoral fellows with knowledge about verbal and nonverbal considerations for:

    1. What makes a great first impression
    2. Phrasing for introducing yourself or your research
    3. How to project confidence with humility
    4. Mirroring to connect and make others comfortable

Applying Clifton Strengths to your Job Search

Join us for a workshop held by a Clifton Strengths Coach where students will learn how to use their identified Clifton Strengths to create professional goals and thrive in the workplace. 25 students who pre-register for the event will receive a link to complete the Clifton Strengths assessment 1 week before the event.
