Kelsey Herndon, a first-year Anthropology graduate student, has been awarded a grant from Google.org to explore innovative uses of Google’s AlphaEarth Foundations embeddings for refining forest ecosystem maps in Peten, Guatemala. Her project, “Next Generation Forest Mapping for Biodiversity and Heritage Conservation in Northern Guatemala,” will utilize the $5,000 grant to support a field season at San Bartolo—the archaeological site where she conducts her research. The fieldwork will focus on documenting the region’s forest biodiversity and gathering data to validate the model’s results.
Congratulations Kelsey!
