Nicollette Mitchell, a fifth-year DTL student and Russell G. Hamilton Fellow, was recognized as a finalist for the International Society for the Learning Sciences Outstanding Student Paper Award. Her paper, titled “A Black woman in geoscience is like a unicorn”: Black women’s educational experiences in the geosciences, presents findings from her in-depth interview study of Black women in the geosciences. The study identified important themes in a field that is predominantly white, offering insight into the challenges and opportunities for creating more inclusive spaces for minority scientists in higher education and research.
