Stipends & Salaries

Minimum Salary/Stipend Levels

Effective December 1, 2016, a minimum salary and stipend level for all full-time postdocs was established by Vanderbilt. Given the newly released FY 2019 NIH stipend levels, the minimum payment has increased from $48,432 to $50,004.  This minimum payment is regardless of job classification (fellow or trainee) and funding mechanism (salary or stipend). This minimum payment does not apply to postdocs who work less than 40 hours per week. A postdoc who works less than 40 hours per week will be prorated based on years of experience, per the NIH chart below. A postdoctoral salary/stipend may be supplemented at the request of the faculty mentor/principal investigator and approved by the respective dean of the postdoc's home department.

Upon reappointment, all postdocs appointed by the OPA should be offered a stipend of at least the current NIH NRSA scale below based on their years of postdoctoral experience. There is no set maximum allowable compensation. A postdoctoral salary/stipend may be supplemented at the request of the faculty mentor/principal investigator and approved by the respective dean of the postdoc's home department.
