Position Details

Postdoctoral Fellow. Start date in Fall 2017 (exact date negotiable). Initial appointment through Summer 2018, with possibility of renewal depending on progress and availability of funds (extension for at least one additional year anticipated).

The research group led by Guil Gualda at Vanderbilt University has an opening for a postdoctoral fellow to study timescales of caldera-forming eruptions. The project will focus on the use of quartz geochronometry to derive timescales of magmatic crystallization, but it will also include opportunities for field work, thermodynamic modeling, textural studies, and possibly paleomagnetism. Field areas will be primarily in Japan, but comparative studies including deposits elsewhere, particularly in New Zealand, are possible. While a general plan exists for the work to be performed, details of the project will be defined in collaboration with the postdoctoral fellow.

This project is part of a broader collaboration between Takeshi Hasegawa (Ibaraki University, Japan), Darren Gravley (University of Canterbury, New Zealand), and Guil Gualda (Vanderbilt University, USA) focusing on caldera-forming volcanism in Japan and New Zealand. The project is primarily funded by the Japanese Nuclear Regulatory Agency through an agreement between Vanderbilt and Ibaraki University.

We seek someone who is highly motivated and who has strong analytical and quantitative background; experience and interest in field work are highly desirable. While the postdoctoral fellow will be based at Vanderbilt, extensive interaction with collaborators in New Zealand and Japan is expected; thus we seek someone who is interested in being part of an active international collaboration, and we anticipate travel to Japan and possibly New Zealand will be involved. 

REQUIRED: A PhD in a relevant discipline completed by the start date; significant experience with analytical work using a scanning electron microscope or electron microprobe; experience with quantitative processing of analytical data.

DESIRED: Experience with cathodoluminescence imaging using an SEM; experience with computational modeling and programing; experience with field work and other analytical techniques (e.g. LA-ICPMS)
