Demystifying  Taxes for Grad Students and Postdocs

Venue: Wilson Hall, Room 103

Are you intimidated by the prospect of preparing your grad student or postdoc tax return or unsure that you prepared it correctly? Are you confused by the tax forms you received from your institution – or the forms you didn’t? This seminar breaks down how to calculate and report your taxable income from your salary, stipend, fellowship, and/or scholarships. The topics covered are: income tax basics, tax preparation methods, pay types and tax forms, calculating and reporting your income (using qualified education expenses if applicable), paying tax throughout the year, and tax repercussions for your pay type.

  

The Grad Student and Postdoc's Guide to Personal Finance

Are you ready to take the next step with your finances as a stipend-receiving graduate student or postdoc? Do you want to learn how to allocate your money more optimally, break the cycle of living paycheck to paycheck, build up savings, and/or begin investing? This seminar teaches graduate students who receive stipends and postdocs how they can develop positive lifelong financial habits and increase their net worth while still in training. The topics covered in this seminar are: financial values and goals, budgeting, saving, investing, and debt repayment.

Peak Performance Series  

Registration is now closed as we are over enrolled.  This series is offered every semester so please check back in Fall 2019.

The Peak Performance workshop series is designed to promote expert performance by exploring common issues impacting graduate and professional student and postdocs.  

Spring 2019 Dates All sessions scheduled on Fridays, 12:30 pm – 1:30 pm, in the Center for Student Wellbeing moved to Eskind Biomedical Library, Training Room, basement (turn right off the elevator)

  • February 22 Session 1: Perfectionism and “Imposter Syndrome”
  • March 1 Session 2: Motivation, Mindset & Effective Goal Setting
  • March 15 Session 3: Performing under Pressure, Fighting Procrastination & Increasing Efficiency
  • April 5 Session 4: Managing Conflict and Relationships
  • April 19 Session 5: Finding Work/Life Balance

 

Critical Conversations Series for Graduate Students

These programs are most suitable for students in PhD programs but are open to all Graduate School students.

These sessions will be held on the Wednesdays noted below, from 4:00 - 5:00 PM in Alumni Hall. 

Please RSVP as specific room location will be based on number of attendees.

  • Communication & Expectations in the Advising/Mentoring Relationship (March 20)  
    Maintaining a positive relationship with your research mentor is very important and can be achieved through frequent, open and candid communication – including establishing clear expectations and boundaries.  This session will focus on how to establish an open line of communication with your mentor in order to address any differences and align your expectations, in addition to focusing on strategies for improving communication (in person, at a distance, across multiple mentors, and within proper personal boundaries).  We will also discuss the importance of establishing a mentoring and support network.
  • Addressing Conflict in Academic Relationships  (March 27)  
    We will discuss strategies for working through conflicts in academic relationships, particularly your mentoring/advising relationships, including on campus resources and processes for working through these situations.
  • Self-Efficacy: Building Confidence and Independence as a Researcher (April 10)  
    Self-efficacy is a belief one has in his/her ability to successfully complete a given goal or task. In other words it is situation specific self-confidence.  We will discuss the sources of self-efficacy and strategies for building your research confidence and independence.
  • Receiving and Responding to Feedback – The Power of Social Persuasion (April 17) 
    In this session, we will work to (1) Identify the intent behind statements and questions, (2)  understand the role of constructive feedback and improve communication between trainees and their mentors, (3)  Assess the influence that mentors have on their confidence in their abilities and (4)  Devise strategies to cope with and respond to feedback that negatively influences their confidence.
